DeBartolo Family Foundation Spirit of Humanity Presented To Phoenix House Florida
The DeBartolo Family Foundation is proud to present Phoenix House Florida with a $25,000 Spirit of Humanity Award. The award honors local nonprofit organizations that impact the Tampa Bay community in a meaningful way.
Founded in 1994 by the parents of two young adults struggling with addiction, Phoenix House Florida provides individualized, holistic drug and alcohol addiction treatment through short-term and long-term care options, treating those struggling with addiction wherever they need to be – at home or at a treatment facility. Today, Phoenix House Florida assists approximately 2,000 adults and 330 youth annually on a broad spectrum of addiction treatment services.
The Foundation’s Spirit of Humanity Award will help increase access to the organization’s Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program in Hillsborough and Marion Counties. MAT utilizes medications in conjunction with comprehensive psychological services to treat opioid use disorders, sustain recovery and prevent overdose.
“Phoenix House Florida provides a safe haven for people that need it most and we are honored to select them as our Spirit of Humanity Award recipient,” said Lisa DeBartolo, Chief Executive Officer of the DeBartolo Family Foundation. “The organization has been providing personalized care to people for substance abuse and alcohol rehab for 25 years, and the new MAT program will help address the opioid epidemic facing our community today.
Opioid use and deaths have increased dramatically in recent years and the MAT program intends to serve 500 people during a 5-year period.
“It is an incredible honor to have been chosen recently to receive the Spirit of Humanity Award from the DeBartolo Family Foundation,” said Maria Alvarez, President and Chief Executive Officer at Phoenix House Florida. “We are deeply humbled to have been recognized for the work we do to help members of our community overcome obstacles that are beyond their control. This generous $25,000 award will help us to continue expanding our services, providing more access to compassionate substance use treatment in the greater Tampa Bay area.”
Recipients of the Spirit of Humanity award create unity, demonstrate hard work, and extend their outreach by helping people in need to overcome obstacles that are beyond their control. Since 2002, 58 recipients have been recognized with the $25,000 Spirit of Humanity Award, awarded three times annually.
